Mercer County Bible in the Schools

In 1939 Bible classes began at Bluefield High School. Gradually, more and more schools asked to have classes. Until 1985 the Bible In The Schools committee, made up of local people, raised the money for the classes, set the curriculum based on the Supreme Courtís guidelines, and hired the teachers.

In 1986 the program, following the West Virginia Attorney Generalís guidelines, came under the Mercer County Board of Education. The Mercer County Board of Education then took on all responsibilities except finances. The Bible In The Schools Board of Directors, working with each of the nineteen schools that have Bible classes, have continued to raise the money meeting all of the expenses, no expense paid by the Board of Education.

Teachers are hired by the same state standards and requirements as all other teachers, and receive the same benefits.
