Bible In The Schools
A Brief Overview

“Communicating Ancient Wisdom To Modern Times”

Since 1939, thousands of  students in Mercer County have had the opportunity to study the Bible.   These students have benefited from a program that --

Acquaints students with the historical and literary aspects of the Bible

Teaches the biblical allusions and quotations which fill our conversations and writing

Examines the Bible’s influence in the history of the United States and the world

Since 1939 Bible instruction was approved by the Mercer County Board of Education and the West Virginia Board of Education. As recently as 1986, the Attorney General of West Virginia reaffirmed the legality of teaching the Bible as history and literature in our schools.

Although the Bible program is under the Board of Education, it is funded by the contributions of the public – families, businesses, community organizations, churches, and foundations.  It is the responsibility of the Board of Directors of the Bible In The Schools program to raise these funds.

The Board of Directors, the Bible teachers, and most importantly, the students of Mercer County, take this opportunity to thank those individuals and organizations who have generously supported the Bible In The Schools program.
